What is anxiety?

Anxiety and stress are completely normal reactions that happen to everyone. The human body is designed to experience stress, and to react to it. When you experience challenges (stressors), your body produces a physical and mental response. That’s stress, and while it can be helpful and even motivating, if it gets out of control it’s both debilitating and destructive.

Why do I experience anxiety?

Stress responses help your body adjust to new situations. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. For example, if you have an important event in the near future, a stress response might help your body work harder and stay awake longer. But stress becomes a problem when stressors continue without relief or periods of relaxation and when the symptoms of stress start to effect negatively on performance.

What is happening to my body when I experience stress?

The body’s autonomic nervous system controls your heart rate, breathing, vision and more. This built-in stress response helps the body face danger by preparing the body to take flight, and that’s why this natural response is typically called the ‘fight, flight’ response. Helpful when faced with a hungry lion, not so helpful when training for a race, delivering a presentation.

Why does it feel so horrible?

The fight, flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. This chemical release can make you feel a series of physical symptoms including; nausea, aches and pains, chest pain, exhaustion or trouble sleeping, headaches, dizziness or shaking, and high blood pressure to name a few.

“My daughters anxiety was taking over every aspect of her life, and during her exams it got worse. She instantly connected with Rachel and after the first session I saw a positive change in her. Rachel was able to help her focus and to actually enjoy her revision. My daughter is more confident and focused as a result of the therapy.”

How can Hypnotherapy help with anxiety?

Hypnotherapy has proven incredibly valuable in the management and treatment of negative and unhelpful behaviours.

We all experience feelings of anxiety at various points in our lives because it’s a natural response to stress and uncertainty. But for some, anxiety can affect their daily lives .

Hypnotherapy can help boost feelings of confidence while reducing feelings of fear and intense worry. Hypnotherapy can get to the root cause of your anxiety: the fear that is leading you to feel on edge, unsafe or panicked. By identifying the cause, a qualifies Hypnotherapist can help you reframe negative thoughts or beliefs, to reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Is Hypnotherapy for everyone?

Not all people are able to enter a state of hypnosis fully enough for it to work well. In general, the more easily a person reaches a state of relaxation and calm during a session, the more likely it is that they will benefit from hypnosis

In certain cases you will need sign off from your GP before you have Hypnotherapy. If you have a history of psychosis or certain types of personality disorders, you should speak with your GP before having hypnotherapy as it may not be suitable for you.

 FAQs

  • Hypnosis is a completely natural state. You know when you are daydreaming, watching something on T.V. or engrossed in a book, you are so absorbed in the moment you don’t notice when someone walks in the room or speaks to you? Well, these are examples of natural hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is guided hypnosis, a state of heightened focus and concentration that’s achieved with the help of a therapist (Hypnotherapist).

Hypnotherapy uses relaxation, extreme concentration, and intense attention to achieve a heightened state of consciousness or mindfulness.

  • Hypnotherapy can break negative thought patterns and responses to stress and provide you with a healthier reaction to the stresses you are experiencing.

  • Contrary to how hypnosis is sometimes portrayed in movies or on television, you don't lose control over your behaviour while under hypnosis and you can’t get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis either. In fact, you generally remain aware of and remember what happens during a hypnosis session.

    • You cannot ‘get stuck’ - this is quite impossible.

    • You cannot ever be made to do things you don’t want to do.

    • You do not become unconscious - you are totally aware of yourself and your surroundings at all times.

    • You can leave the hypnotic state whenever you want to - you are always in control.

    • You cannot ‘lose your mind’ or be in any way ‘possessed’.

    • You will not suddenly blurt out all those dark secrets - unless you choose to do so.

    • You are not in anybody’s power, and nobody can take control of you in any way.

  • Hypnotherapy is used to treat a wide range of conditions, issues and unwanted behaviours that have a negative effect on you and your life, such as:

    • Achieving Goals

    • Anxiety

    • Confidence and Self Esteem

    • Crisis Management

    • Depression

    • Grief and loss of a loved one

    • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

    • Panic Attacks

    • Phobias

    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

    • Relationship/Family/Work Conflicts

    • Sleep Disorders

    • Smoking

    • Sports Performance

    • Stress

    • Weight Loss

    • Unwanted Habitual Behaviours

  • The first session is 30 mins and free. It involves a lot of talking. Me understanding what you’d like you change and you hearing about how Hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goals.

Subsequent sessions last 60 minutes and are usually a mix of talking, hypnosis, homework tasks and practical strategies you can implement immediately to support yourself moving forward.

  • Be committed, want to be there and have an open mind.

  • The best way to answer this question is to talk to a trained Hypnotherapist and ask for an initial consultation where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and gather the information you need to make the right decision for you.

Hypnotherapy is very much a collaborative therapy, so it’s important you work with a therapist who feels right for you, who you feel you have a connection with and who you can talk to openly.

If the first person you speak to doesn’t feel right, try someone else. It’s worth finding the right fit, especially as in doing so you can become the best version of yourself, the person you’ve always wanted to be.

  • It really depends on the changes you want to make in your life. Making a positive change doesn’t happen instantly, but generally you will see positive results in a much shorter period than many other psychotherapeutic methods.

  • The first free session is 30 minutes and subsequent sessions are 60 - 90 minutes depending on what the goal is for therapy.

  • Absolutely not!

Contrary to how hypnosis is sometimes portrayed on stage and TV, you don’t loose control of your behaviour while under hypnosis. You always maintain complete control over what you do and what you say.

  • If you wish to cancel a booking you must do so at least 24 hours in advance of the session. Cancellation after this will result in a late cancellation fee
